Teaching drivers how to excel at driving electric
- Year: 2023
- My role: Product designer
Problem
- All drivers transitioning from diesel to electric need to upskill to master electric trucking.
- Our energy consumption models underestimated the energy consumed by not accounting for inefficient driving behaviors.
These issues led to truck batteries deteriorating faster than anticipated, impacting our business case margins negatively.
Solution
- Share best practices before each route using scores from previous drives and relevant data (like weather conditions).
- Giving drivers performance feedback after each route.
Outcome
- A year later, this is part of our premium offering and used by some major clients; reducing their energy consumption by an average of 10% per truck.
- One of the winners in our design sprint competition.
- Overall positive response from the commercial team. ”When can we show this to our customers?” commented the head of US operations in the design sprint presentation.
My role and contribution
- I was the product designer in a cross-functional team consisting of a Product Manager, data scientists, and developers. I was solely responsible for both the UX and UI design.
- We kickstarted the project with a design sprint, which I facilitated. The outcome from the sprint was then prioritized in our regular roadmap.
- My main contribution was leading the discovery phase to frame the problem and exploring multiple solutions before aligning on the final one.
My biggest takeaway was realizing how much we can accelerate problem-solving when kicking off a cross functional collaboration with a design sprint.
